Let’s face it the vast majority of people rent cottages in South Devon to get on to the beach. Whether you’re a surfer, a paddler or a sandcastler the beaches in South Devon are some of the best in the country. Here’s our pick:
Long, spacious sands, warren-like dunes, good for surfing and paddling. Large car park (full of VW vans) and toilets nearby as well as lifeguard in the Summer. Bantham has a shop and a nice pub (Sloop Inn). Big enough to accommodate the crowds in the summer and the lack of cafe on the beach can keep numbers down.
Bantham – Secret Beach On Coastal Path!
Just as you cross the headland, past the first bit of Thurlestone Golf Course there’s a secret little stretch of beach that’s accessible from the coastal path. Can’t find an official name for it yet – and don’t tell everyone!
Great cafe, manned car park run by the National Trust and good toilets. Can be busy in the summer but never unpleasant. Sandy beach with a view to Thurlestone Rock – cool silhouette shots at sunset for amateur photographers.
Small stretch of beach close to Thurlestone village. Parking available near the golf course.
Fairly short stretch of pebbly beach close to Dartmouth. Lovely cafe and plenty of space for kids to play. The beach shelves down quite quickly so it can be a little dodgy for kids to swim in but the river at the right end of the beach is great for paddling (and hide and seek).
