Cottages in Dittisham

Known by locals as ‘Ditsum’, Dittisham is a small South Devon village with a big character. It’s one of the most ‘des-res’ addresses in the south west, and house prices tend to inspire a sharp intake of breath. But there are also plenty of cottages in Dittisham that are available all year round as holiday accommodation, giving you the chance to become one of the ‘Ditsum locals’ for a few days. Cottages in South Devon make the perfect base to explore everything that this stunning part of the world has to offer.

Dittisham is located on the bank of the River Dart where the river is widest, a little way up-river from the estuary and a short distance from the popular town of Dartmouth. It’s also close to the ‘English Rivera’ resort towns of Paignton, Brixham and Torquay and their many beaches and family attractions, but far enough away to be protected from the summer crowds.

With such a location comes the promise of boating, sailing and swimming (though for the latter good swimming skills are advisable, particularly during the strong spring tides). If you need to hire boats or equipment there a number of places to do so in the village.

There’s a great little cafe, the Anchorstone Cafe, open in summer months where you can have pretty decent nosh – whole dressed crab, scampi and chips and so on – or head to the Ferryboat any time of year for a pint with great views over the river.

If you’re an Agatha Christie fan there’s one very good reason for basing yourself in Dittisham. Here you’re in the heart of Agatha Christie country, and cottages in South Devon feature extensively throughout her work. You can get a ferry direct from Dittisham to Greenway, Agatha Christie’s one-time residence (now managed by the National Trust), just over the other side of the river. As well as enjoying the pleasant ambience of the crime writer’s estate you can enter Greenway House and view the Christie family collection.
